"The Forgotten World Highway Run"

Hamilton, New Plymouth, Stratford, The 'Forgotten World Highway' and back through Lower Waikato.

This is a 804km ~ 2-3 day ride on quality roads with some unique back country adventure.

We start by leaving Hamilton and heading down SH39, SH31 and toward Taranaki on SH3 which leads to New Plymouth. The road is in good condition most of the time as it is a main truck route, some sections are windy through the gorge and then it opens up into the North Taranaki Bight where rivers flow from the hills out to sea and lovely small batches are found, the last section is very coastal with sea views as you ride. We recommend a stay in New Plymouth before the second stage of the journey up the 'Forgotten World Highway'. From New Plymouth you head to Stratford and then onto a back road called Ohura Road which is SH43, this was main route in and out before the coast road was forged. It snakes through moderate hills and is quite windy, through a couple of tunnels where there are small gravel sections and to the Whangamamona Hotel. This is an ideal place to stay to get the feeling of real New Zealand countryside and few cold kiwi ales or lagers to wash down the good ole kiwi grub or food.

The Road out leads to Tamarnui, and onto SH4 to Ohakune which is another interesting little town to stay at for the night. The final route back heads through the Western Bays of Taupo, SH32, up through Mangakino via Waipapa Road, right onto Oreipunga Road through to Cambridge via Karapiro, and the then back to Hamilton. This section from the Western Bays or Taupo has few cars on it and is excellent back coutry riding. Should you need any work done or a service, before or after the trip drop into Harley Davidson Road and Sport Hamilton.
