Bay of Plenty

"The Kaimai Ranges Run"

Auckland-Waikato to Mt Maunganui and Back Through Tahuna.

2 Day Trip to The "Miami" of New Zealand.

This ride is only 375km return to Auckland and includes beautiful country riding and an exciting run up the Kaimai Ranges before you settle down in the exotic coast of the Bay of Plenty. Once out of Auckland over the Bombay Hills keep going south till you get to a big roundabout and take the back road that goes to Gordonton, where there is a nice cafe to stop at. Just past Gordonton do a left and this road takes you to Morrinsville which is also a good cafe beak, otherwise before you get into town take right hand turn that leads to a round about then another right again and that road finally takes you onto SH27 which leads to Matamata. This road out of Morrinsville called Kereone Road is free flowing country road with fantastic riding. As you head into Matamata you do a left and it take you through the town, plenty of places to stop including the lovely Workman's Cafe which has some of tastiest food around as well as wonderful hospitality. Head out of Matamata and the road will take you to a junction where you do a left where its says Tauranga. This leads you up the tight sweeping Kaimai Ranges road to he top, it is a busy stretch with plenty of trucks and special care must be taken at all times and especially in any wet, cold or foggy conditions. It is a dangerous road to ride back down and watch for short slow lanes that sudden close-off if you are passing anyone. At the top of the ranges on the left just before the last bend there is a viewing area which is well worth the stop. Continue on to Tauranga on SH29 and there is a Caltex gas station at Tauriko, further down the road do a left and go through the toll motorway, it is free for bikers and you will pop out in Tauranga or continue on to Mt Maunganui.

See our recommedations for food and accommodation at Tauranga and Mt Maunganui.

The journey back to Auckland or Hamilton can be two ways, back over the ranges or along the Katikati road. This is a notoriously dangerous road with many intersecting side roads and special care needs to be taken as there can be traffic on this road with not many places to over take. The road leads to Waihi, through the gorge then to Paeroa where you can get gas and food, and then contines on to Auckland or head back through Morrinsville to Hamilton. You will find the Paeroa-Tahuna Road just before the McDonalds when you are heading north into Pareroa, this goes over a bridge and then some km's down the road do a right, it is all straight roads till you get to Tahuna. There is a sharp left just before the Tahuna Pub and then you are on the Tahuna by-pass road. It's a great back country journey.

The whole run makes for a great journey with the combination of different scenery and wonderful destination of Tauranga/Mt Maunganui.
